He was so happy at 1 stage and now he has lost his wife and one of his close friends or family and now he doesn't have any one to talk to and now he is all alone. But then suddenly a little boy comes along and makes the picture nice and happy. Because now he has someone he can talk to.
Normally you play the piano or any other instruments to express your feelings. This man was expressing his feeling of sorrow, yet of joy. First, he remember about his wife that passed away, then losing a friend/family member, and then getting a favourite present. As Rosemary said, a little boy came and brightened up his life.
Two of the events he has been through is maybe the man playing the piano's wife died and his best friend or brother died in war.
